Overall

Happy and Unhappy at the same time for this. I don't like certain parts of developing art anymore and i've developed a distaste of the field. In another module, I learnt something I love doing and I think that's the area I want to concentrate in. I still like art and I think i'll continue to develop work for this as its an area I want to keep developing just not as a primary thought. Defnitely wanting to work more in design, and specifically, level design.

My pieces were half good and half bad with one fail. My main aspect was the book of my development and through that I can see what I did and how my work has got better over the year and how I think about it as a whole.

Fail on my behalf

Starting this piece, I had the idea of creating a charcater launching his bird in the air to convey the storyline of the main character using the bird to see if the water he decreased to the floor. The image wasnt working well in perspective, wasnt working in image, wasnt working in stroyline. Overall, I didnt have anough time and ran out of it pretty quickly.

Shouldn't off, but I gave up on this piece which will bring me down in my grade area but the story wouldn't come out on paper whatever I did. Due to illness before hand (which isnt an excuse ino) and other subject I was left to do this piece in the 2 days before hand in and it wouldnt be created. So instead of creating an ineffective piece, I decided to concentrate on my book so I can show how i've developed, which was the focus for me personally in this project.

Gilgamesh Art Piece

The idea fo this piece started well, just ended really badly. Not at all happy with this piece but due to time and the fact I was ill at the the time, the look of this piece decreased rapidly. Because I didnt use the designs for the pieces for my original concept work, this piece cam out very bad and ineffective. Overall bad piece all round.

Semi Realistic Colouring

This was a tutorial I followed to create nicely flowing semi-realistic character which is effective in his/her role. Using a colour palette always handy while creating the work to use in blending all the colours together. I do think this is effective in its style, but if it looks nice, i'm not too sure...

Research Aspects- Imagine FX

Imagine FX were a primary source of research for me throughout the project. I used their tutorials and artistic reference to help me design, learn and be encouraged by artists. They learnt me specifically;

-How to digitally draw
-How to colour effectively on paper
-How to colour in different styles and techniques
-How to develop my own style

Along with digital reference, from them i've developed an artistic understanding of things which I didn't have before so i'm overall happy with everything designed that I used from them as reference.

Adapa and the food of life

Heres my third piece. There would be more development pieces but I've overlapped stage 2 so I cant retrieve that back as an image. With this one, I noticed the peek in my work that always seems to happen which im hoping to attack get rid of in my next year, for my honours project. Eventhough this is so, this piece didnt come out to bad. Looking more at semi-realistic, this strongly came out this wayand has a lot of shading heading that direction.

I like the effect that this image is trying to convey. That the guy at the top of the picture is angry with the guy at the bottom of the screen, looking like a court scene. The colours and style work well for that. But im sloppy in this piece. Theres no technical skill to it at all and thats generally depressing. Im hoping that in my next piece, it doesnt keep going down hill.

Realisticly Coloured Character

After trying the realistic method in designing a dog, I decided i'd try a person and attempt  the bane of my life in rendering, human skin. This is my best piece to date doing this kind of rendering of humans and I think I did it effectively. The skin is overall my favourite part and I think being able to do this,  was a sign that im learning, a sign i am actually getting better.

The colours in the piece are basically ugly. They are not good on the eye at all and maybe thats because of the rendering style I undertook. The yellow feels and looks dirty and eventhough working with the character in some form, it doesnt work to the audiences eye as well.

Realistic Rendering - Rory (My Dog)

First realistic render i tried. Really really happy with this. Using the picture of my dog as reference, I personally tihnk I created a good portrait of him in the picture and compliments him really well. Taking into account lighting, his fur and skin blends well of each other.

A negative area of this would probably be the mouth area. The mouth seems to lack colour. In my defense, it was so it didnt contract too much but maybe I didnt put enough detail into this area.

Ishtar and the descendant to the underworld

Overall with this piece, i'm happy and I think there's certain aspects that work really well and make the piece effective. I think the colours blend well together and the actual colours suit the theme of the image. Also the background of the whole image is really nicely rendered and I think it works nicely around my theme.

What I don't like is how some of my rendering doesnt suit its place on the image and really doesnt look nice. I think I can get away with it but the whole image might of looked nicer if I took a little bit more time with this.

First Piece Final

First final piece started and showing the development of the piece from original sketch.

As this was the first piece, I concentrated on this one quite heavily and had the idea set in my mind right from the get-go.

Constructively, in a positive way, the piece actually has good colour and the fire effect glowing around the room actually works and bounces off quite well and how I developed that in a semi-realistic form, im quite impressed with.

The thing i'm mainly disappointed by is the perspective of the image seems to be distorted.and the floors doesnt work in flow with the character. Rather disappointed in that apsect but I think its something I can blend better with good colouring.

Overall, happy with the end result of this piece and hope to have others have similar results.

Research Post

I'd prefer it if when marking this from the tutors, that my research be the main aspect. As much as I want my final pieces to be important, the main thing I was always focusing on during the work. Learning different styles, techniques and artists was my focus of the whole project and then the final pieces were just to evidence some of the anatomical skills i had learnt and what colouring techniques i've learnt and prefer.

Yeah, my book is the main aspect so i'll be paying more attention to that in the final products I think and will be defnitely arting it up more.

Hope for Change

Meh.....as much as I love art and especially developing characters, i've lost my zest for actaully creating concept art now. I'm finding it tedious and really not that interesting as much.

I still find it useful that i've learnt all this anatomcial stuff and that my research has helped me understand the major differences between realistically styled and semi-realistically styled art.

Yeh, overall just losing interest and im hoping it doesnt take a toll on my work coz it might do. I think its the colouring element im not enjoying.

Also, im still glad i took this as I now what I want to do for my honours project and where I want to take that. So im looking forward to doing that.

Character Designs for Adapa and the Food of Life Artwork

Like most of the pictures for character designs in my pieces, i'll be using this as a reference to my pictures at the end. Will most probably not look as detailed as these due to my pure increasing of boredom when developing art work as of late.

Really starting at this time to regret I chose this project. Eventhough I think i've learnt a lot, thinik i've decided on a different route.

Character Designs for the Gilgamesh Art Piece

Here are the character designs for the Giglamesh art piece. I should be using these as a base inspiration for my final pieces. These also show how im getting better in my digital art skills and how its becoming easier for me to draw different poses and anatomical bodies.

Character Designs for Ishtar and the Descendant to the Underworld Art Work

These are the character designs for the Ishtar and the Descendant to the Underworld Art Work. The Top being the Underworld Goddess and the bottom being Ishtar, the Goddess. I prefer the Ishtar design as a rule but I think i'll grow to like the Underworld Goddess art better when it comes to the final art work.

Character Designs for The Creation Art Work

I did basic concept art for The Creation Art Work as I wanted to get the base character designs on paper so I can work on them with my final piece. I might go an edit these further into the project to make them better but for now, I like these designs and these work for my final pieces.

Leg and Feet Anatomy

Concentrating on the lower part in my anatomy drawings, I wanted to find an easier and quicker way to draw both the legs and feet. Looking into the muscles of the legs, I found a relatively easier way to draw draw legs using simple shapes.

When it came to the feet, perspective is what always looks terrible. By looking at a simple way of blocking in the feet,  I can then go into more depth and create a more realistic foot. I now also see how the toes work at the end of the feet and how the heel works with the rest of the foot.

Overall happy that i've  now finished with anatomical studies, as I think I can now develop better pieces for my final product in the project aned any future pieces I draw out

Anatomy - Torso Studies

As big as the torso is, muscle depth was so important to understand get right. So I looked into how I could do this as a whole. Look at the how the different muscles interact with each other and what kind of effect is created.

Happy with this and I think in further pieces of art, I'll be able to understand this specific part better and as a side effect, cfinish this part quicker.

Final Ideas For Mesopotamian Myth Art Work

The Creation:

- As its based around the creation of humans, I wanted to develop the art piece around that. In the story, the humans are created by clay from the god Enki. So in the picture im hoping to create the character Enki, in an artist room modelling humans from clay. Things to do:
  • Enki Character Design
  • Design of human from clay
  • Inside Environment with religious theme
  • Magical occurances to represent the god creating life itself
ET: 2 Weeks

Ishtar and the Descendant into the Underworld:

- The God Ishtar, leaves to go to the Underworld and demands to be let in. There are 7 gates in which she must pass. Each time losing a piece of clothing. In this picture, I want to show this. So at each gate a piece of her clothing will be lost and then at the end, she is enraged and lunges for the Goddess of the Underworld. Things to do:
  • Character Design for Ishtar
  • Character Design for Erishkegal (Goddess of Underworld)
  • Environment art for Underworld Gates
  • Individual clothing elements
ET: 2 Weeks

Adapa and the Food of Life:

- After Adapa (the first mortal with wisdom) has been chucked over board from winds he thought caused by the god he breaks a wing which controls the air and wind itself. The God Anu is enraged and sends for Adapa. Adapa stands in courst against Anu and other gods.I was contemplating on making this like a court scene. Things to do:
  • Character Design for Adapa
  • Chracter Design for Anu
  • Environmental art for the court scene
  • Clouds theme
ET: 2 Weeks

Amaru Flood:

- In the Amaru Flood, Utnapishtim was told by a god that the flood was occurring. Similar to the Noah's Ark Story from the bible, he built a boat for him and his family to survive the flood along with animals. At the end of the story, the gods granted him and his family immortalism. In the art, I hope to show when Utnapishtim sent out birds to know when the flood had ended and he could land. Things to do:
  • Character Design for Utnapishtim
  • Character Designs for his family
  • Animal Designs
  • Boat Design and Flood Scene
ET: 3 Weeks

Gilgamesh:

- In the story of Gilgamesh, he was a king and he was very tyranical against his people. A man created by the gods called Enkidu was meant to challenge and destroy his tyrnaical reign. When they did fight, Enkidu loses and they become best friends. When going into the jungle, they here of a beast called Humbaba. They fight him and cut off his head. This will be the art piece.
  • Character Design of Gilgamesh
  • Character Design of Enkidu
  • Design of the beast, Humbaba
  • Holding the head of the beast after being beheaded
ET: 2 Weeks
