Mesopotamian Culture & Society Research

Urban and Rural Living

Typical lower class home (city) = sun-dried brown earthen bricks, low door, few windows
with wooden grilles, outside staircase to flat roof (people slept there on hot nights).
Inside was a single room which was cool but poorly lighted.  Few decorations except
mats and blankets on walls/floors.

Wealthy homes (city) = built with kiln dried bricks making them stronger; an open court
in the middle of house which contained a well, oven, and grinding stone; rooms for
dining, sleeping and leisure

Assyrian Wealthy homes = better decorated, had niches for lamps, and had lavatories
(This shows their technological advancement)

Country houses for farmers were made out of reeds instead of stone and houses were in
danger of collapse.

It was the woman’s responsibility to take care of the home.  If the family was wealthy the
woman had help from slaves.
