Borderlands 2 Mechanics Ideas 1

Weapon Exp System

The EXP system is an essentail part of development for characters in the game. With different ways of building up characters along side it, the weapons that players use essentially dont actually power up themselves. So to develop the EXP system even further, along with both Character EXP and Character Skills, the Weapon EXP serves to create even more individuality and unique depth to characters.

The Weapon EXP System works individually to the other EXP systems in the game. This exp works through how many enemies are killed with that specific weapon. By killing enemies with that weapon, the weapon gains EXP. When the EXP has reached a certain amount, players can upgrade one of the gun's skills such as reload speed, ammo capacity etc. The EXP cost will increase each time you buy a weapon skill adjustment so more enemies need to be killed. The level and difficulty of the enemy killed will also hcange the amount of EXP earned after death. So the higher the difficulty and level difference, will give a player much more EXP to spend on that weapon. Players cannot transfer exp into any other mechanic or another weapon as its individual to this weapon.

This overall summarises that a character when retrieving a low level weapon, after a period time witht e same wepaon, the level of damage the weapon could deal and properties of the weapon increases to a medium level weapon which a player could pick up in the game.

The weapon cost would be dependant on the rarity of the weapon. So the more rare the weapon, the more it'll cost to upgrade it.

The amount you can upgrade by will be rigid to a certain amount and there will be a max amount in which you upgrade one of the statistics to.

There'll also be some stats which cant be adjusted such as zooms on the weapon. This being due to technical and practical issues. There is no way this is just increased unless you add a new piece of equipment. If the weapon doesn't have the effect from the beginning such as Critical Hit Damage, then a player can't increase this as its not a pre-set skill already on the weapon. There are 4 main areas that all guns can increase so these are always changeable (in bold on the list) in this mechanic. There are also other effects (which can get upgraded through Badass Points as well) which get upgraded but they have to be effects already applied to the weapon to be changed. These stats are:
  • Damage:
  • Accuracy
  • Fire Rate
  • Ammo Capacity
  • Critical Hit Damage
  • Elemental Effect Chance
  • Elemental Effect Damage
  • Gun Damage
  • Recoil Reduction
  • Reload Speed
